STEAM festival brought Sesvete to life as a centre of creativity and learning

On Saturday, 25 April 2026, the promenade of the „Sljeme“ complex in Sesvete was turned into what urban areas so often lack – an open, accessible space of knowledge. Through the STEAM festival Sesvete, the local community became a living laboratory in which technology, education and creativity came together into a single experience. The event showed that interest in science and technology is there, but that it needs to be given space, context and a chance to interact. That is exactly what happened in Sesvete, organised by Udruga Zelene i plave Sesvete and FabLab Zagreb. Visitors of all generations took part in interactive content, from hands-on sessions to demonstrations of technologies that shape how we learn, work and make things. The key value lay in the open, accessible, barrier-free format. In such a setting, knowledge stops being abstract and becomes tangible, understandable and usable. Why do we do things like this? Our focus is on strengthening the local STEAM ecosystem and encouraging cooperation between residents, schools and organisations. The STEAM festival is part of a wider initiative to turn the space of the former Sljeme factory into a contemporary community centre. Sljeme za sve Together with the Faculty of Architecture in Zagreb, we are developing a space that is not merely a location but a platform for learning by doing, developing ideas and connecting people. What does that mean for the community? – children and young people build practical knowledge outside the classroom – residents explore technology with no prior knowledge needed – the space takes on a function that drives development In other words, we want to create conditions in which the community does not merely follow change but actively helps shape it. Whether you were with us at the event or did not make it this time, we invite you to fill in the questionnaire and help us plan what comes next: https://www.fablab.hr/upitnik A big thank you to everyone who took part in, supported and visited the STEAM festival Sesvete. Events like this exist purely because of the people who turn up, join in and give their energy back to the community. Special thanks go to Zabavni Radio for covering the festival and conveying its atmosphere. 🤩😊👌 https://www.fablab.hr/steam-festival-ozivio-sesvete-kao-centar-kreativnosti-inovacija-i-ucenja/
