FabLab’s representative, Roberto Vdović, was invited as one of several international experts to share experience on third places and on building a community of users. The meeting was organised by the Agence nationale de la cohésion des territoires – ANCT, and we were included in it at the suggestion of Vulca – European Program, of which FabLab is a member. The first online meeting dealt with the role of third places – the common denominator for all forms of new innovative spaces such as hackerspaces, makerspaces, fab labs, coworking spaces and the like – through three working groups/workshops on three topics. We shared our experience in the session on third places and the role of citizens and the community, while further sessions covered new forms of production and the role of third places in culture. This was an exceptional opportunity to highlight the activities of the SCOPE project, which works on strengthening the capacities of similar civil society organisations in Croatia within the thematic network STEM as a driver of society, with the aim of producing public policy proposals on the subject. Also, with the aim of involving local communities and individuals, two mobile centre projects were mentioned: one on the circular economy – BioPLAnet, in which FabLab takes part as a partner – and STEMerica, which promotes the STEM field through new digital fabrication technologies in activities all over Croatia. Alongside these three projects co-financed by the European Social Fund, we mentioned the impact of third places on urban regeneration through the Fab City HUB, the topic of the Horizon 2020 project Centrinno EU Project, as well as our association’s Adriatic GreenLab initiative aimed at remote areas, in which the French agency for territorial cohesion is particularly interested. It was particularly useful to hear everything France has done in recent years on the subject of third places, which will be one of the topics of the French EU presidency in the first half of 2022. The working group will continue its work in person in Paris at the end of January 2022.
