DiSTT Module 2 at “Matija Mesić” Grammar School – from a 2D pattern to a spatial form

On 20 March 2026  we held the first session of Module 2 – “Patterns with purpose – 2D patterns”, part of the DiSTT project, with group B of “Matija Mesić” Grammar School in Slavonski Brod.

During the workshop, participants worked through the basics of 2D and 3D representation, got to know the concepts of the 2D pattern and 2D digital fabrication, and discussed technologies such as laser cutting and engraving, vinyl cutters and plotters using concrete examples. Particular emphasis was placed on understanding how a functional spatial form can be developed from a flat element.

In the hands-on part of the workshop, participants:

• engraved and cut demonstration pieces on a diode laser themselves,
• assembled an armchair from pre-cut 2D parts, connecting 2D elements to a 3D form,
• explored the moiré effect through overlapping, shifting and rotating patterns,
• and began thinking about their own ideas, which they will develop further using 2D technologies.

For independent work between sessions, participants chose to work on technical sketches of their own ideas, which will serve as preparation for next time, when they will start transferring those projects into software and preparing them for further digital processing. They will have mentor support in that process as needed. The next step will be moving from sketch to digital preparation for fabrication.

We are looking forward to continuing the work and to the new 2D solutions that will move from an idea to a concrete, fabricated piece!
